Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese healing method similar to acupressure in that the energy system of the body is manipulated to restore the energy flows of the body to normal.  But while acupressure just focuses on the acupoints themselves, Shiatsu also works on the entire energy Meridian on which the acupoints are located.

Because Shiatsu practitioners utilize thumbs, palms, elbows, and even feet to apply pressure along the Meridians it is commonly thought of erroneously as a form of Japanese massage.   In massage, the point is to apply pressure to the muscles directly beneath the area being worked on.  In Shiatsu, the stimulation is applied with the objective of influencing the energy flow of the meridian, which can have an effect on the body far from the point being worked on.  Thus, pressing the webbed area between the thumb and forefinger can help relieve a headache.

Shiatsu sessions usually last from 30 to 60 minutes and can be done through clothing, although it is advisable to wear a light cotton outfit such as a tracksuit.  When working with Chi natural fibers are best and the fewer zippers, belts, etc the better.

I have found that frequently any session which utilizes energetic healing may have a delayed effect, much as taking a pain pill cannot be expected to provide relief the instant you swallow it.  Almost invariably clients will report that immediately after the session they feel very relaxed, with some lessening of their symptoms.  Later they say that they had a very good nights sleep and woke in the morning feeling much better.
