Not long after I got started with Reiki I discovered a wonderful book entitled "Your Hands Can Heal You" by Master Stephen Co and Eric Robbins, MD. What initially drew me to the book was the way it approached Energy Healing in a very matter-of-fact way. After a brief description of the different energies it jumped right into techniques for feeling auras and chakras, and then ways to clean out stale/negative energy from another person and infuse them with new energy. This was followed by a discussion on the properties of different colored energies, how to project the different colors of energies, and which physical and psychological ailments the different colors worked best on.
When I took my first class in Pranic Healing this straight-forward approach was also used. After a brief introduction to the energy system of the body, focusing on the chakras, we jumped right in to an almost recipe-like method for energetic healing. First there were some brief exercises to sensitize the hands, followed by learning to feel the auras and chakras of our fellow students (which happened amazingly quickly). This was followed by exercises in which we learned step-by-step techniques for cleaning the energy body and chakras, then energizing them.
This concept of cleaning out stale/negative energy before infusing new energy is what sets Pranic Healing apart from most other energetic healing techniques. A good analogy that is used in the class is to think of a sponge full of dirty water. It is much easier and faster to fill the sponge with clean water by first squeezing out the dirty water, than by just pouring more and more clean water on it.
The first time I used Reiki was on a person recovering from a broken arm, and they complained of pain in the arm, which surprised me because everything I had read stated that Reiki was a wonderful experience, not a painful one. Only later when I underwent Pranic Healing training did I finally understand what had happened.
Pranic Healing also differs from Reiki in that there is no need for an Attunement. In the class students are simply told to focus on their left hand chakra as the energy receiver, and on their right hand chakra as the energy transmitter. Slightly more focus is placed on the left hand versus the right hand. In this way the healer is drawing in more energy than they are sending out.
